Peer Ministry Team!

Thank you for your interest in being a part of our Peer Ministry Team! As a member of the team, you will be expected to be a servant leader and role model for the Butler Catholic community. Our leadership team serves two semester based on the calendar year (Spring and Fall 2021). Please read below to learn more about what being on the Peer Ministry Team entails, and when you are ready to apply, just click the button at the bottom of the page! Applications are due by November 15th and we will have in person interviews the week of November 16th. 

What is a Peer Minister?
Peer ministers fill many different roles in our community but ultimately they are striving to serve as Jesus taught us through servant leadership. A servant leader is one who leads by example, they are looking out for the needs of both the community and individuals, and make choices based on that. They are servant first and leader second. Our peer ministers are people who strive to bring Christ to our community and our community closer to Christ. 

Who can apply?
Any currently enrolled Butler University student, freshman to junior, who practices their Catholic faith. 

Qualities we are looking for in a Peer Minister:
Faithful Catholic (Sunday Mass, sacraments, prayer), team player, willingness to grow spiritually, community builder, model of Christian virtue, individual and shared responsibility, shows creativity, takes initiative, positive attitude.

Responsibilities of all Peer Ministers
In addition to meetings mentioned below, the following is required of all Peer Ministers (conflicts must be reported beforehand):

• Sunday Mass with the BCC - the Eucharist is where our evangelization begins and ends!
• Spring Peer Minister Retreat
• Fall Peer Minister Day of Retreat
• First Year Welcome and Outreach
  • Center for Faith and Vocation Ice Cream Social 
  • Block Party
  • Fall Retreat - October 2021 TBA ASAP
• Helping with Sunday Suppers 2-3 times per semester
• Helping set up for Mass 2-3 times per semester
• Pray for our community and a personal commitment to growing in one's faith life
• Uphold Christian lifestyle and values

Peer Ministry Team Roles:

There are a few different ways in which Peer Ministers may serve. Take time to consider what talents God has given you, how you might best use those to benefit the community through the roles below. You may put a preference for a particular team on your application, but please be open to the Spirit if you are asked to serve in a different capacity than your first preference.

 Co-Presidents

• You’re the face of the BCC!
• This includes prayer, presence, communication, logistics, and looking to the future!
  • Prayer: Pray for all in the BCC and the Butler community as a whole! This isn’t anything anyone can really “check” you on, but prayer is crucial. Be praying and encourage others to do the same!
  • Presence: Be at most events, attend a small group, generally be present to those who are involved in the BCC. People should know who you are!
  • Communication: Regularly check in with all peer ministers, communicate in the group-me about meeting times, events, etc. 
  • Logistics: Meetings with the Director regularly to go over past/upcoming events. Run the weekly Ministry Team meeting, establishing the agenda with the director beforehand. Overseeing any University regulation-related logistics related to securing rooms for events, going to SGA organization meetings, etc.
  • Future: What is the BCC doing, big picture? Where do you see the BCC in 1 year? In 10 years? After we’re all graduated, the BCC will still be here—what kind of community do you want to set up for people who will come after us?

CORE Team

The Ministry team will focus on building up the BCC by creating programs and events that focus on outreach to all Catholic students on campus, faith and formation, as well as service to the local community and social justice issues. Responsibilities and time commitment (in addition to above) will be weekly meetings (~1 hour) with the team, and attending/supporting programs planned.

Faith & Formation 

• Coordinate opportunities for people to practice and grow in their faith. Examples of this are periodic Adoration and Confession (both on and off-campus), Theology on Tap, Praise and Worship nights, etc.
• Questions to consider:
  • How can we be forming our community in their faith?
  • What do most or all people not know about their faith that they should, and how can we teach it to them?
  • How can we encourage active and engaging prayer lives and faith-related discussions?​

 
Service & Social Justice 

• Coordinate and prepare social justice activities/events/talks. How can we be giving back to the Butler community? The Indy community? How can we be feeding the hungry, physically/spiritually/emotionally, around us?
   

• Ensure Operation Leftover and Food Pantry run consistently and smoothly. Also, coordinate and help with other events! Examples of past events include: raking leaves in the community, an event for Halloween, clothing drive, “Flex burn” where people use extra flex dollars at the end of the semester to buy supplies for Operation Leftover, etc.
   
• Questions to consider:
  • How can we best serve the Butler and Indianapolis communities?
  • How can we encourage Butler students to serve the needy around us and within our own community? (“Need” extends to spiritual and emotional needs, not just physical ones!)
  • How can we work towards a more equitable and charitable society?

 
Outreach

• Coordinate community-building events where all feel welcome and invite others into our community. Examples from the past include; off-campus outings, bonfires, game nights, and the BCC formal.
• Think critically about how we can be a more welcoming community, and invite others into the BCC through how we advertise and communicate with all Catholic Students on Butlers Campus.
   
• Questions to consider:
  • How can we be continually looking outwards towards those not yet in or on the fringes of our community while still supporting those already involved?
  • What sorts of events can bring our community together in fellowship?
  • How can we support incoming members of our community, and how can returning members take a role in supporting them? Especially first-year students in the first 6 weeks on campus.

 

Small Group Leaders

Small-Group leaders are focused on building up the BCC through facilitating their own specific groups and encouraging individual students to join. The Church arose from small groups of Christians coming together for prayer, fellowship, and to discuss how to live out the teachings of Jesus, likewise each of our groups is focused on these same things. The responsibilities and time commitment (in addition to what is above) include weekly preparation for your group with your co-leader (~1 hour) and facilitating your group (1 hour), as well as check-ins and training sessions scheduled throughout the semester.
 
Bible Study

• Plan and lead weekly Bible study and recruit students to come! Things to consider: What in God’s Word do you want to focus on? How can you make the Bible “relevant” to people in the 21st Century?

Men’s group 

• Plan and lead weekly men’s group. How can you help form fellow college men, creating fraternity, accountability, and a drive to grow their relationship with Christ? Also, be recruiting throughout the semester and encouraging guys to come. Weekly meeting once outside the normal meeting time to pray, prepare, and plan upcoming men’s group meetings/events.

Women’s group 

• Plan and lead weekly women’s group. Also, be recruiting throughout the semester and encouraging ladies to come, cultivating a community that encourages and uplifts. Weekly meeting once outside the normal meeting time to pray, prepare, and plan upcoming women’s group meetings/events.
